CIVIC PROJECTS
Service is central to the work and purpose of the Garden Club of Trenton. Selected projects reflect the Club’s commitment to conservation, education, horticulture, and beautification.
Washington Crossing State Park, Nelson House
In 2006-2009, the Garden Club of Trenton planned and completed a dooryard garden at the park’s historic Nelson House with generous funding from the N.J. Committee of the G.C.A. The project included the research and planting of historically appropriate plants, the design and construction of the garden, including fencing and benches. The garden’s ongoing maintenance and care continues to be a priority for the Club.
Washington Crossing State Park, George Washington Memorial Arboretum
In 2012, in celebration of the club’s Centennial year, the organization aided in the restoration and rejuvenation of the Arboretum at the suggestion of the park’s leadership. Located to the south of the Johnson Ferry House and just east of the river overlook and the Rt. 29 pedestrian overpass, the Arboretum, was established by the Pack Family to commemorate the 200th anniversary of General Washington’s birth and was dedicated in 1932,. Overlooked for many years, it is now a priority for the Club, park officials and the Washington Crossing Park Association.
In the fall of 2013, with generous support of the New Jersey Committee of the G.C.A., the club planted and ultimately labeled a grove of 20 trees and shrubs (5 large, 12 small and 3 shrubs) to help in bringing the arboretum back to life for the enjoyment and benefit of park visitors.
In January 2019, the Club received an additional grant from the New Jersey Committee of the G.C.A. to support the Arboretum with arboriculture services and other enhancements to highlight its importance to the Park.
The Trent House
The Club maintains its longstanding partnership with the Trent House by decorating the historic home for the holiday season each year. The Club also creates wreaths and other holiday greens to be sold at the Trent House’s annual greens sale fundraiser conducted in the first weeks of December.
